Production of a voltage across a conductor or
semiconductor carrying a current at a right
angle to a surrounding magnetic field. It was
discovered 1897 by the US physicist Edwin
Hall (1855-1938). It is used in the Hall
probe for measuring the strengths of magnetic
fields and in magnetic switches.
